My Summer Lips

Thanks to Influenster, I was able to try out NYC Cityproof Intense Lip Color. The cherry smell is incredible and the ease with which it glides on is great for the summer. I don’t like wearing lipstick in the summer because they make my lips feel kinda heavy, but Cityproof is lightweight that I even forgot I had it on!

What do you guys think? Should I wear red more often?

Another Snow Day in NYC

I love the snow, but this frigidly cold winter is enough already. Spring where are you???

Elf Antics Day #5

This is the first year we do the Elf on the Shelf, and of course I’m all late with it. Us Puerto Ricans don’t have these kind of traditions, so it’s all new to me. Today, the girls found the elf, appropriately named Buddy, in the kitchen hanging out by the bag of bags. I’m excited to see the girls face tomorrow when Buddy is in a different location.

Are you guys doing the Elf  on the Shelf this year?

Celebrating Firsts with Pampers Swaddlers

Disclaimer: This review was made possible by Latina Mom Bloggers and Pampers.  All opinions are 100% mine.

As my youngest daughter’s fifth birthday approaches, all I can think about is how time has flown and all the milestones my girls have gone through, especially in the last year. My baby is growing up and I am so happy that I have had the opportunity to document most of it on social media. Most of my pictures were lost in the hurricane, but thanks to Facebook, I have most of her pictures intact. Her first day home from the hospital was amazing and her coming home picture was perfect.

The worst was when she had nacios on her butt and was hospitalized. I coudn’t get my hands on the diapers I normally used, Pampers Cruisers, and the other brand gave her a rash and the nacios. I am used to dealing with nacios, since many in my family get them constantly, but the doctors felt they knew more about them than I did and admitted my baby to the hospital for “observation”.

Its sad to know we spent almost two days in the hospital and they did nothing for her. The medication they prescribed was not available for 3 weeks, so I treated her at home with my remedios caseros de Abuelo and Abuela. By the time the medication came in, I had already cured her of all her ailments. I never used those diapers again, and always made sure I had my trusted brand of Pampers in my home. My daughter’s sensitive skin worked well with Pampers Cruisers, but I wish they wouldv’e have Swaddlers back then in her size. Pampers Swaddlers are Pampers’ softest diaper ever, and while moms have always loved Swaddlers for their newborns, Swaddlers are now available through size 5!

To celebrate Swaddlers sizes 4 & 5, Pampers has 30 days of incredible giveaways and a grand prize of FREE Swaddlers diapers & wipes for a year. Join the celebration and enter our 30 days of sweeps on the Pampers Facebook page: ( can win daily prize bundles, plus the grand prize of free Swaddlers diapers & wipes for one year!

My Top Ten Favorite Movies

Those that know me, know that my family owned one of the first video stores in the Bronx back in the 80s when VCRs first emerged. I became sort of  a movie buff since I had my pick of any movie I wanted to watch, and did so for almost 15 years. I have compiled a list of my favorite movies, and by favorite I mean I drop everything, regardless of importance, if one of these movies is playing on TV. They are not in any specific order of importance because I love them all so much that I couldn’t classify them to a specific ranking.

Cover of "The Godfather (Widescreen Editi...

1. The Godfather Part 1: I love this movie because of the family dynamics among the Corleones. Regardless of all the violence, there is genuine love between them in all the relationships. Well, maybe not in Carlo’s marriage.

Cover of "The Godfather, Part II (Two-Dis...

2. The Godfather Part 2: My dream is to go to Italy, and visiting the old country through the eyes of the young Vito Corleone is breathtaking. His struggles and tribulations that afflicted him, made him the person he was and gives you an understanding on why family was so important to him.

The Count of Monte Cristo (2002 film)

3. The Count of Monte Cristo: My daughters probably know this movie by heart now. My DVD doesn’t even ask to play anymore, it just automatically does it. This story of vengeance and friendship is very captivating. I was first introduced to the story when I read the book for an English class in high school and I was in love. I was drawn to read more classics, including taking some college literature courses.

Harry Potter 2011 Blu Ray Years 1-8 Box Set Cover

4. Harry Potter Movies: The geek in me first read the Harry Potter books because I would see many people, especially older ones, reading the books on the subway every morning on my way to school. When the movies were released, I was the creepy adult in the theater with no kids watching eagerly like any other kid.

Cover of "Scarface (Full Screen Anniversa...

5. Scarface: If you was raised in the 70s and 80s, then you know who and what Scarface is. No, not the gangster Al Capone, but the Brian DePalma film starring Al Pacino (you notice a theme here with Pacino). Classic lines, like “I tell the truth, even when I lie” have been repeated and used in the music industry and other mediums. Although the movie was not a box office blockbuster, the movie still became a cult classic, with one of the biggest underground followings of any movie in history. We were teased for a while on a part 2 based on the son of Tony Montana, who was going to be portrayed by the rapper Cuban Link. Nothing ever came of the project, but I’m sure if it was to resurface, many would be in line to see the drug kingpin’s story line continue with his son.

Cover of "Traffic [HD DVD]"

6. Traffic: When this movie came out, it was one of the first DVDs I purchased for my first DVD player and I was immediately in love with it. Seeing the world of drugs from all angles, and how they are interconnected, whether the connection are obvious or not. From the low-level drug dealer to the cartel head, Traffic takes you on a journey into the lives of several families, located throughout the United States and Mexico, but connected by the same drug trade. Drugs can affect everyone, and this movie expertly portrays that life and the darkness it can entail and bring upon a family.

Cover of "Not Without My Daughter"

7. Not Without My Daughter: If anyone was to try to hurt my girls, I would go all lioness on them, just like Sally Fields who fights heaven and hell to get her daughter back from the clutches of her Middle Eastern husband and his family in Iran. The lack of rights that women have in this region of the world is deplorable, and this movie depicts the plight of many woman who just want to be mothers to their children. Even though the movie is set in the 80s, many of the challenges are still present and relevant in the Middle East today.

Cover of "Finding Nemo"

8. Finding Nemo: In the words of Dory, “Just keep swimming” is one of the most motivational phrases that came out of a cartoon in recent times. This movie captivates you with its vibrancy in color and the storyline of love between father and child. Most movies are centered around a mother’s love for their children, but Finding Nemo portrays the love of Marlin and his son Nemo, who disobeys him and gets lost out at sea. After many years of waiting, we finally are going to have a continuation to the movie, titled Finding Dory and hopefully it will be just as good, and hopefully better, than the first one.

Cover of "Sleepaway Camp"

9. Sleepaway Camp: My mom was always into horror movies, and since she did not want to watch them alone, my sister and I would sit down and watch them with her. My sister was a wuss and cannot watch a horror film to this day. I, however, love a good horror flick and one of my favorites has always been Sleepaway Camp. It has a cheesy storyline, but the concept of a boy being dressed and forced to live as a girl was something unheard of in the 80s. Of course the boy was expected to go crazy with a mom forcing him to dress and look like girls. I didn’t like parts 2 or 3, the original was the best one.

Cover of "The Mummy [Blu-ray]"

10. The Mummy: The geek in me had to have an archaeological movie in the bunch, and the only reason The Mummy beat out the Indiana Jones movies was because I’m obsessed with all things Egypt. This movie is rich in history of the pyramids and the legends of the mummies. My dream has always been to travel to Egypt and go to the pyramids, the Valley of the Kings and the Museum of Antiquities. I have always wanted to learn how to decipher hieroglyphics and study the way of the Egyptians. Maybe one day I will be able to go to school and get a degree in archaeological studies.

There are many other movies that I  love, but these hold a special place in my heart, and like I said, I drop every thing and change my plans if they come on television. Do you have any favorite movies? Do you drop every thing to watch them?

Show Your Puerto Rican Pride This Halloween with a Vejigante Costume!

It is rare to find costumes that represent the Puerto Rican culture, but I have found a Vejigante costume for both adults and kids! What is a vejigante you say? The history of the vejigante goes back to medieval Spain, when St. James defeated the Moors, and masks with horns wore worn representing the defeated infidels. Over the years, the Puerto Rican natives used the vejigantes as a symbol of patriotism and self identity, and it is now deep rooted in Puerto Rican culture, especially in places like Ponce and Loiza. A Puerto Rican even celebrating our history and culture is never complete without the vejigantes.

The costume is customizable and made to order. First you pick the colors you want for your mask. Here is an example of masks:

Then you pick your costume, you can get more elaborate ones, for an extra charge.

All costumes are custom made, orders need to be placed with sufficient time, in order to ensure completion and delivery before Halloween. Make sure you check out the other products Isla Online has to offer, straight from Puerto Rico.

Will the Kingsbridge National Ice Center be Good for the Bronx?

knicFor years, there has been much debate on what should be done at the Kingsbridge Armory, which has been vacant for many years. A while back, it was decided that the armory will become the first indoor This seems like a great idea, but will this center be affordable for the  people of the Bronx? We already have an ice skating rink, recently opened in Van Courtlandt Park and the prices are very reasonable.

Today, work came out that Mark Messier will be the CEO of the Kingsbridge National Ice Center and all I can think about is how I am not going to be able to afford to take my kids there. The center is not expected to open until 2017 and by that time its going to be more expensive than the alternatives we have in the other boroughs. From the looks of it, I will not be using the facilities as its out of my budget. Do you think you will be going to the Kingsbridge National Ice Center, or will you stick to the skating rinks we know you can afford?

Cuba to Florida….She’s Doing Nothing Special

photo(2)I keep hearing all this talk about Diana Nyad being the first to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Really???? The first??? Excuse me but Cubans have done this for years since Fidel Castro took over. All this brouhaha over some woman swimming it is nonsense. Their has been a law in place “pies mojado pies seco” (wet feet dry feet), in that if you make it to dry land, you will be given refuge and not deported. This woman is doing nothing special t all because she has people with her, watching her every move and making sure she is safe. She is swimming across during the daytime too, making it even easier for her. Cubans head out at night, preferably during a full moon for better visibility, and its every man for themselves. I have a friend who did this swim years ago, in the 90s, and out of 30 guys only 3 made it. Some drowned others died from exhaustion and lack of food. Food is scarce in Cuba so swimming on an empty stomach makes it even harder to do.

photo(1)I think it’s disgusting how this woman is being glorified for doing something, just for the glory and attention, when many others have done the same just so they can get food for their families to survive. I rather hear the story of how Don Pancho and Jose made it across to feed their family at home, or the self-made millionaire who came to this country wanting the American dream. Many of these Cuban refugees have criminal records, but if you dig deeper, many were stealing food to feed their families. I think dealing with the human rights violations that occur on a daily basis, in our own backyard, need to remedied  instead of going half way around the world to fight a battle we have nothing to do with.

Disappointed in the School Trips

museum post

I have my daughters in private school because I think today the education is better than in public schools. I went to public school for elementary and middle school, but high school I did in a private institution. Back then, things were different, and I did not go to private school because it was better. My mother wanted me to have a more christian education and since I was old enough to travel alone, I was placed in a private high school in Queens, New York. My middle school was great and I took high school level classes, for which I took the Regents exams so I could get the high school credit. I had an awesome principal, Mr. Alfred Ford, who took the time during lunch to tutor a group of us, and had us take SSAT exams for entry into exclusive schools across the country. This type of dedication from a principal was great but I noticed that in the private school everything was more impersonal, even though it was a christian school with allegedly christian values.

Even though my experience was a not so great one, I still placed the girls in private school because the education system in New York City has gone downhill. The problem is not the teachers or the principals, but the parents of students that believe the education of their respective kids is the job of the teacher. Even though when my parents did not speak much English, they still took the time to speak to the teachers and help with the homework assigned to us. Some parents are only seen by the teacher on parent teacher conference and sometimes not at all. I have such an open communication with my girls’ teachers that I even get punishments extended to them at school. I work with them and send in notes because sometimes waiting until parent teacher conference does not help and may hinder the education of the girls.

Asia Gate Entrance at Bronx Zoo.

The one thing I notice is that is lacking in both the public and private schools are school trips. I remember going on school trips once a month, whether to the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Gardens, one of the many museums in the city or any one of the thousands of plays and shows available. My oldest has been in school for 6 years now (2 years of Pre-K) and she has gone on one school trip, and it was to the movie theaters to see Oceans. In the 80s, my parents paid $5.00 for every trip to cover expenses and if a parent was also going on the trip $10.00. School trips are essential for kids to learn as they get see things hands on in the real world. I don’t know the reason school trips are not done like before, because one trip per year is not enough for our kids to get some culture and exposure to the arts and sciences. Some parents don’t have the time to take their children to museums because of work schedules and sometimes even the cost of admittance is out of their reach when they have to pay for more than one at a time.

I’m going to do my best and take the girls to different museums every time they have a day off from school, and that is guaranteed to be once per month as the school always holds a conference day. I had not done so before now because I was under the impression that their girls would be going on school trips like I did when I was their age. Easter vacation will be starting soon and i plan to have a fun-filled week for them because they do deserve it. We have gone through so much in the last couple months after Hurricane Sandy and it’s not fair to them since they don’t understand why we still cannot go home. A little entertainment will help them forget about all we have lost and value what we still have left.

Lady, Its Your Fault He’s Fat

FAT MAURY KIDI was watching The Maury Show yesterday, and to my surprise it was not a paternity episode. It was  on overweight babies and the ordeals the moms go through to satisfy their kids insatiable appetites. These kids weigh over 100 lbs. and they are all less than 4 years old!!! How do you let your child get like that and where are the doctors that check these kids? When I go to the well-care visits for my girls, there is always a nutritionist that keeps a record of my kids’ weight and development. When my youngest was a little under weight because of the flu, I still had to visit the nutritionist until her weight was back on track.  I don’t understand how a parent does not take a more active role in their kids eating habits. One woman complained that it hurts her to hear people make comments that her child is overweight. Well you know what lady, its your damn fault so don’t get mad when others make comments.

As a parent, its your responsibility to look out for your child’s welfare. Don’t get mad when others make a comment you do not like because it’s about your child. People are not mean, they are just pointing out a fact that you do not want to accept. Yes it hurts if someone says something about your child but you are the parent. You should-be been in charge of the situation in the first place. Maybe you hearing the fat comments and jokes will motivate you to do what has to be done to save your child from avoidable diseases and illnesses. Many kids in this country suffer from obesity that can be avoided if the parent would actually parent. Kids have to many options and many parents are quick to give these options without setting limits.

IMG_2400My girls know better than to throw a tantrum over food. It’s a general rule in my home that you eat what is being served and everything on the plate must be eaten. If you refuse to eat what is being served then you simply do not eat and get ready for bed. I’ve heard of homes where 2 and even 3 different meals are made to satisfy everyone in the home. Do you know how much money you end up spending on your food budget if you continue this practice? A missed meal will not harm your child and you will start to take control over your child’s eating habits. If your child sneaks food from the refrigerator, then put a lock on it and all the cabinets if necessary. Snacks are earned in my home and that is after keeping their room clean all week, good grades on the tests administered said week at school and good overall behavior at home. TV and video game time also has to be earned but they must attend all their karate classes throughout the week.

Some might say I’m too strict with my girls but it’s because I want them to excel at everything they do and lead healthy, productive lives in the future. They have everything they can possibly want and more, but at the same time appreciate it and value the hard work it took me to get it for them. I love my girls and I will do everything in my power to keep them safe, even from themselves.

I’m MIA Today

Wondering why I’ve been quiet today. Well it’s because….20130111-165229.jpg

Cuca is a Girl????

About 2 years ago, my father found a pigeon injured on the sidewalk. We are always bringing in stray any things, from cats to even squirrels. My daughters named the pigeon Cuca and an “avian expert” said it was a make pigeon. We never expected for Cuca to last long and honestly we assumed “he” would fly away once “he” was healed.
It’s been over 2 years now, and Cuca is still with us. It’s free to fly away when it pleases but the love it gets here is incredible from everyone who comes into contact with it.
Today, when my father goes to clean its “bedroom”, lo and behold an egg was found. My father found one yesterday, but thought it was a joke being played by one of his friends, so he discarded the egg and continued with his fatherly duties with Cuca. I haven’t told the girls yet, but we are getting ready to go get a nest for Cuca and her young.

Have you ever had a pet where the sex was wrongly identified? Have you ever found an unexpected present from your pets? I have no idea how long until the egg hatches and whether she will be laying more eggs. This is going to be an awesome learning experience for the girls and me.

Happy Three Kings Day

Happy Three Kings Day! For those who celebrate this holiday, what did Los Reyes leave in your shoes this morning? I’m still sick, and since I’m a single mother, I was not able to get everything I wanted to. The girls woke up and were amazed that their were gifts by and in there shoes.
Lets see how long this playhouse will last once my little destructors start using it later on today.
I think I’m going to regret this one, but hey, they want to learn how to play different instruments. Who knows, I might have the next American Idol here.
And of course, new 3DS games for their video game addiction. Although something tells me I’m going to play with them more than they are.

Do you celebrate Three Kings Day? What did they leave for you this morning?

Happy New Year 2013

A new year has arrived and all I hear are people making resolutions for the new year. Promises to change lifestyles like smoking and attitudes to dreams of financial prosperity is all being promised, but how long do these promises really last? I learned a long time ago that these promises last about 5 minutes….depending on the amount of alcoholic beverages available at midnight.

I prefer to reflect on the past year and focus of changing the things that did not work for me. For instance, last year I made the decision to cut certain family members out of my life. Their negative energy was bringing me down, but once I cut them off, I was able to excel in areas that I had difficulty in previously. Many of the changes have been slow to come, but I’m in no rush…slow and steady wins the race.

As a single mom, having to deal with many obstacles alone has been a challenge. Being able to overcome them has made me a stronger person in business and in my personal life. I will continue to do what I must for my girls but most of all for my self worth. Nothing makes me feel better than accomplishing something on my own when everyone else has turned there backs on me. This year will be no different and I hope to accomplish a few goals I started last year.
For now, we wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013!

Hyland’s Cough Syrup Review

A couple of weeks ago, I received a coupon for a new Hyland’s product, cough syrup for kids. I was excited about this because I’ve been using Hyland’s Teething Tablets for over 7 years now and I loved them. Hyland’s has 100% natural products and since I was raised in the mountains of Puerto Rico, I’m always on the lookout for products similar to the home made remedies I was so accustomed to.

My grandfather claimed to be direct descendant of the Taino Indians and was always teaching us ways to use nature for our health. Honey was always prevalent in any home remedy that was prepared to combat our colds and flus. Being a single mother, it’s hard to whip up the remedies I need for my kids and sometimes I can’t find the ingredients necessary for the recipes. Hyland’s new cough and cold medication line meets my needs. These products are all natural and even smell like pure honey. My girls loved the medicine so much, they actually asked me to make them peanut butter and honey sandwiches made from the medicine!!!

When any store bought medication tastes and smells so good that the kids want it for lunch, it scores high on my mom approved products list. It’s sometimes difficult to get the girls to drink medication since they are rarely sick, but they were lining up for more Hyland’s Cough Syrup. I would definitely purchase this again for my girls, even though it was difficult to find at first. The price is more than most conventional medications out their, but for some reason natural products are always more expensive.

Our Visit to Harry Potter: The Exhibit

A couple if weekends ago, the girls and I went to “Harry Potter: The Exhibit” at Discovery Times Square. This was a great experience from beginning to end. The museum does need more outside advertisement because it was not noticeable and we had to ask for help once we arrived at 44th Street. Since you are not allowed to take pictures (this sucks), they have a setup at the start of the tour where you pic your house and take a picture in front of a green screen. At the picture stand, they offer these handheld players that provide you with little insights on the exhibit depending on the numerical code you enter and are posted throughout the exhibit.

Ginny proceeded to line up us “first years” and our journey began. The exhibit was beautiful and everything on display are all the original items used in the movies! Kids get sorted into houses with the Sorting Hat. The girls were looking around making sure no one was talking for the hat. They got sorted into Gryffindor and we continued walking through the exhibit. The movie props are amazing and the robes are spectacular. The movies do not do them justice. I loved the blue ones Professor Lockheart used in the Chamber of Secrets, but the best one was Hermione’s purple dress used for the Yule Ball in the Goblet of Fire. I wanted the dress for myself, and a few of the robes too, because the exhibit does make you feel as if you are in the movies, whether you are standing in Hagrid’s Hut or by the boys’ beds. Everything feels magical that by the end of the tour you feel as if you can swish and flick a perfect wingardium leviosa spell!

We had a blast, and you will get your money’s worth in regards to the tour. I found that little player thingy a waste of money because what they had to say was boring and I was such a child running from one display to the next, that I didn’t have time to input the codes and stand their until the recording was finished. The gift shop almost killed me with those prices. I would have liked to have purchased some souvenirs but not at those prices. The entry ticket to the exhibit cost less than most of the items, including the generic wands. I can get the same items on Amazon for loads cheaper. You are going to want to get the pictures you took at the beginning of the tour and they will get you with the prices their too. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and the exhibit has peaked our curiosity in wanting to go to the Florida and London locations of Harry Potter world. Hopefully, I will find souvenirs that cost less than the entry ticket.

Feliz Navidad!!!!

Santa arrived at our home sometime after midnight. No matter how hard the girls tried to stay awake, they just couldn’t hold up. These girls are too much, they use logic and reason in ways that would rival law students!! These girls reasoned that since we are Puerto Ricans, and it’s time is an hour ahead, that we should see Santa by 11pm NYC time. Really???

Reluctantly, they go to sleep and rise by 6:30AM.

And the paper mess begins, but the girls actually made a pile of the paper and once done unwrapping, they put the paper in the recycle bin!!!

The girls received lots from Santa, but again logic and reason rears it’s head. Being Puerto Rican means we celebrate Three Kings Day on January 6. That’s the big holiday for us and the girls are expecting triple the gifts that day. At least the best sales are after Christmas, and my coupons are already printed for those 70% off clearance sales on toys coming up. Until next year Santa….

I Love Holiday Videos

I love holiday videos and more so when it involves children. My cousin just posted this up and asked that we view the video as the school is having a contest. The video with the most views wins. What do they win…I have no idea but I love the video. I was distracted by the head props but because I found them too cute. Check the video out and let me know what you think. My cousin’s daughter is the first one running in the hallway scene.
