the midwifes here

Get them Nooks ready to download this week’s selection. The Midwife’s Here seems like an interesting read, especially since I used midwives for both my pregnancies.

Today’s Free Fridays book selection, Linda Fairley’s The Midwife’s Here!:The Enchanting True Story of One of Britain’s Longest Serving Midwives, is a touching memoir from a veteran midwife across the pond.

Manchester, England’s Linda Fairley spent forty years delivering babies and saving women dealing with complicated pregnancies.”Delivering my first baby is a memory that will stay with me forever. Just feeling the warmth of a newborn head in your hands, that new life, there’s honestly nothing like it… I’ve since brought more than 2,200 babies into the world, and I still tingle with excitement every time.”
From Fairley’s beginnings as a trainee nurse at the Manchester Royal Infirmary at just 18 years old, to her present-day position working two days a week as a community midwife for Tameside Hospital, The Midwife’s Here! recounts the fascinating life story of a woman performing one of the most essential medical occupations of our time.

FREE Nook Book Fridays: Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs

Middle-grade readers and fans of young adult paranormal fantasy will fall in love with Tera Lynn Childs’ Sweet Venom—today’s Free Fridays selection.

When shy Grace begins classes at her new school, the usual teenage concerns of fitting in and finding new friends top her list. That is until a minotaur appears, which quickly relegates her more pedestrian high school fears to the back seat. Things go from weird to completely unbelievable when a girl who looks exactly like Grace appears and begins battling the monster.

In this mythology-based adventure, Grace soon finds out that she actually has identical triplet sisters from whom she was separated at birth. The sisters are descendants of Medusa, and now that they’ve been re-united, they must leave their old lives behind to fulfill their monster-slaying destiny.

The recent John Carter film adaptation (starring Taylor “Tim Riggins” Kitsch from my favorite show of all time, Friday Night Lights) may not have broken box office records, but it did ignite renewed interest in Edgar Rice Burroughs’s influential classic SciFi series, John Carter of Mars.

Today’s Free Fridays selection, Jane Carver of Waar by Nathan Long, is a (tongue-in-cheek) homage to Burroughs’s epic swashbuckling space tales. In this updated extraterrestrial adventure, Long replaces the macho John Carter with an equally fearless heroine, Jane Carver, a hard-ridin’, hard-lovin’ biker chick and ex-Airborne Ranger. When Jane finds herself alone on a distant planet inhabited by all types of inhospitable aliens, it’s time to put her Ranger training to good use, and find a way home…fast!

This week’s Free Fridays selection is an inventive, one-of-a-kind hardboiled noir tale that just happens to feature a cast of stuffed animals: Tim Davys’ Amberville.

In this endlessly entertaining novel, Davys is able to take a bizarre premise, and create a world that mirrors our own. Eric Bear is a familiar character—a scared-straight criminal who’s trying to reinvent himself as an upstanding citizen. (Sure he’s a stuffed bear, but you’ll soon relate to him like you would any beleaguered protagonist.) Now the town’s mob boss—Nicholas Dove—coerces Eric into one last job. Dove’s life is in danger, and the resourceful Bear is his only hope. Eric Bear’s tenuous grasp on a normal life is slipping fast, as he delves back into the dark underworld he thought he’d left behind. Along the way, you’ll be captivated by the rich, complex world Davys’ creates, regardless of the fact that it’s populated by anthropomorphic plush toys.

This week’s Free Fridays selection is the first book in Lory S. Kaufman’s inventive Verona Trilogy, The Lens and the Looker.

It’s the 24th century, and humans, with the help of artificial intelligences (A.I.s) have finally created the perfect society. To make equally perfect citizens for this world, the elders have created History Camps: full-sized recreations of cities from Earth’s distant pasts. Here teens live the way their ancestors did, doing the same dirty jobs and experiencing the same degradations. History Camps teach youths not to repeat the mistakes that almost caused the planet to die. But not everything goes to plan.
