One-Night Stay for Two with Bike Rental and Dinner Credit at Marshall Slocum House in Newport, RI

Historical Bed and Breakfast on Mansion-Lined Street

An enormous copper beech tree presides over the Marshall Slocum Guest House on a mansion-lined street in Newport, Rhode Island. The tree might’ve been planted by the first owners around the time of the construction of this Victorian bed and breakfast in 1855. That both the tree and the bed and breakfast are still standing today speaks to the quaint appeal of Newport.

Today, innkeepers Mark and Dana Spring carry on the tradition of hospitality at this historical inn. They met while working at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Boston, and they draw from their experience there to provide first-class service.

Every morning, Mark Spring whips up a sumptuous full breakfast. Possible menu items include crab benedict, blueberry pancakes, or smoked salmon and bagels. Guests can choose to eat in the dining room, on the back deck overlooking the gardens, or anywhere in their room.

The guest rooms are individually appointed with period antiques, nautical artwork, and private baths. The Captain’s Quarters room, for example, features an elegant carved, four-poster canopy bed and a whirlpool bathtub.

Newport, Rhode Island: Upscale Coastal Town with Hints of the Gilded Age

Historical Newport sits on Aquidneck Island, an upscale area lined with coves, harbors, and bays along the Atlantic Ocean. A prominent American port city in the 18th century, Newport contains the most surviving colonial buildings of any city in the country. During the Gilded Age, the city became a summertime retreat for wealthy New Yorkers, who erected sprawling homes along the shoreline. Many of these came to be known as Newport Mansions, and they’re available for public tours.

Another remnant of the Gilded Age is Newport’s cliff walk, a 3.5-mile stretch that skirts the city’s eastern shore and has scenic views of the ocean and mansion. There are unpaved sections of the walk and 70-foot drops just off the pathway, so visitors should tread carefully and wear antigravity boots.

Two-Night Golf Package or Three-Night Stay at Bayside Resort Hotel in Cape Cod

Hotel Centrally Located to Cape Cod Attractions

On maps, Cape Cod looks like New England’s flexed right arm, raising a defiant fist to the mighty Atlantic. In fact, the sea—whose waves crash along a wraparound coast 500 miles long—has always played a leading role in life on the Cape, as evidenced by the white lighthouses still sending their beacons across the water. Bayside Resort Hotel offers a front-row seat to the iconic beachfront from its perch overlooking quiet Lewis Bay.

Bay-view rooms take full advantage of the hotel’s setting, which is just a few miles up the coast from the Kennedy family’s famous summer compound. Common sights from the room include sea birds diving into the bay and ferries motoring between Nantucket and the mainland. Many of the Cape’s most popular restaurants and attractions are situated nearby. At Red Face Jack’s Pub & Sports Bar, Boston sports memorabilia hang from the walls above an elongated L– shaped bar, and patrons while away the hours playing pool and throwing darts in the back room. Those who opt for the golf package will enjoy a pair of rounds at both the Hyannis Golf Course and Atlantic Country Club, which was named the Boston area’s most underrated course by the Boston Globe.

Back at the resort, bartenders at the friendly Moby Dick Pub pour draft beers and mix cocktails beneath a “Ceiling Hall of Fame” thick with dollar bills bearing messages scrawled by regulars past and present. In the arcade, guests try their hand at billiards, foosball, and virtual-reality sock-darning consoles.

West Yarmouth, Massachusetts: Maritime Adventure and Waterfront Fine Dining

West Yarmouth sits on the southern shore of the Cape and is renowned for the lighthouses that preside over its beaches. Elegant, waterfront restaurants and upscale boutiques are scattered throughout the town, and 20 golf courses lie within a 20-minute drive. The Cape’s bevy of charming seaside hamlets, including Provincetown and Falmouth, are also easily accessible for day trips. Kayaking excursions and whale-watching tours provide up-close encounters with the deep and double visitors’ chances of falling in love with a mermaid.
