Disappointed in the School Trips

museum post

I have my daughters in private school because I think today the education is better than in public schools. I went to public school for elementary and middle school, but high school I did in a private institution. Back then, things were different, and I did not go to private school because it was better. My mother wanted me to have a more christian education and since I was old enough to travel alone, I was placed in a private high school in Queens, New York. My middle school was great and I took high school level classes, for which I took the Regents exams so I could get the high school credit. I had an awesome principal, Mr. Alfred Ford, who took the time during lunch to tutor a group of us, and had us take SSAT exams for entry into exclusive schools across the country. This type of dedication from a principal was great but I noticed that in the private school everything was more impersonal, even though it was a christian school with allegedly christian values.

Even though my experience was a not so great one, I still placed the girls in private school because the education system in New York City has gone downhill. The problem is not the teachers or the principals, but the parents of students that believe the education of their respective kids is the job of the teacher. Even though when my parents did not speak much English, they still took the time to speak to the teachers and help with the homework assigned to us. Some parents are only seen by the teacher on parent teacher conference and sometimes not at all. I have such an open communication with my girls’ teachers that I even get punishments extended to them at school. I work with them and send in notes because sometimes waiting until parent teacher conference does not help and may hinder the education of the girls.

Asia Gate Entrance at Bronx Zoo.

The one thing I notice is that is lacking in both the public and private schools are school trips. I remember going on school trips once a month, whether to the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Gardens, one of the many museums in the city or any one of the thousands of plays and shows available. My oldest has been in school for 6 years now (2 years of Pre-K) and she has gone on one school trip, and it was to the movie theaters to see Oceans. In the 80s, my parents paid $5.00 for every trip to cover expenses and if a parent was also going on the trip $10.00. School trips are essential for kids to learn as they get see things hands on in the real world. I don’t know the reason school trips are not done like before, because one trip per year is not enough for our kids to get some culture and exposure to the arts and sciences. Some parents don’t have the time to take their children to museums because of work schedules and sometimes even the cost of admittance is out of their reach when they have to pay for more than one at a time.

I’m going to do my best and take the girls to different museums every time they have a day off from school, and that is guaranteed to be once per month as the school always holds a conference day. I had not done so before now because I was under the impression that their girls would be going on school trips like I did when I was their age. Easter vacation will be starting soon and i plan to have a fun-filled week for them because they do deserve it. We have gone through so much in the last couple months after Hurricane Sandy and it’s not fair to them since they don’t understand why we still cannot go home. A little entertainment will help them forget about all we have lost and value what we still have left.

$129 for a Speed Reading 101 Class from Speedlearning Institute ($695 Value)

Learning how to read is like learning how to ride a bike—without proper instruction, it’s all too easy to end up in a bush. Get lost in a book instead with this Groupon.

$129 for a Speed Reading 101 Class ($695 Value)

During each Speed Reading 101 session, instructors divulge the institute’s guiding principles, designed to alleviate common reading snafus. All attendees receive an instructional manual and the institute’s own RasterMaster laser pen, a tool designed to expand peripheral vision and bolster at-home speed-reading practice. Geared toward high-school students to help prepare them for standardized tests and college-placement exams, this course also assists students in improving scores on graduate-level exams such as the LSAT and the GRE. Classes are held at Columbia University and are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., including five hours of class time and one hour for lunch. The Groupon is valid for classes held on the following days:

Speedlearning Institute

Faced with mountains of data-filled reports to read and process every day, the staffers of John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign turned to the Speedlearning Institute to exponentially increase the amount of information they could absorb. Since then, politicians, students, and business people have followed suit, learning how to read up to three times faster, retain nearly twice the information, and have 50% more time to open Milk Duds after reading movie-title crawls. During six-hour sessions, instructors teach pupils how to utilize peripheral vision and unlock the brain’s ability to quickly process complete sentences without silently reading each word.

During classes, Dr. LeeAnn Renninger teaches students the same people-reading skills she once taught to the secret services of Austria, Germany, and the UK. Attendees learn to watch faces for micro-expressions—split-second contractions of facial muscles—that belie the speaker’s true thoughts and feelings. Tests with imaging software evaluate each student’s reading ability before and after the class, demonstrating their improvement at determining when an outwardly happy person is actually sad or when a supposedly angry speaker is secretly wearing a werewolf mask.

LifeLabs New York

Founded by Dr. LeeAnn Renninger, LifeLabs New York employs the expertise of scientists, artists, and experts in its wide curriculum of creative classes that teach practical life skills. Students learn how to read other’s facial micro-expressions, become more engaging conversationalists, and use idea mapping and visual thinking to brainstorm more effectively. Weekly solo adventures, sent to participants via postal mail, set an itinerary for fun, creative missions designed to help adventurers notice new things, add new facets to their personalities, and gain the bravery to confront freeloading pet felines.
