Appliance Rebate Program for Those Affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee

Seal of New York.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo launched an $8 million appliance and equipment rebate program to help those who sustained property damage resulting from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee recover and rebuild.

If you are a resident of New York State and essential appliances or equipment were lost or damaged because of Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee, you may qualify for cash rebates by purchasing eligible ENERGY STAR® or High Efficiency appliances or equipment. The following products are eligible under this rebate program: refrigerators ($350), clothes washers ($250), clothes dryers ($250), dehumidifiers ($100), furnaces ($2,000), boilers ($2,500), and qualified hot water heaters ($400). Only appliances and equipment that replace those damaged in the storms are eligible for rebates (with the exception of dehumidifiers that can either replace a damaged dehumidifier or have been purchased to reduce humidity resulting from the storm). The New York Storm Relief Rebate Program is providing this assistance exclusively for New York State residents that are not receiving any or full compensation from FEMA or insurance companies for these appliances or equipment. In cases where the award from FEMA does not cover the full costs to replace the appliance or equipment, the NYSERDA rebate can be used to address any unmet financial needs for that appliance or equipment.

To qualify for the rebate, purchases must be made on or after August 29, 2011 for residents affected by Hurricane Irene, and for residents affected by Tropical Storm Lee, purchases must be made on or after September 9, 2011. Appliances or equipment must meet the ENERGY STAR criteria. Exceptions: 1) Clothes Dryers are not ENERGY STAR qualified; rebates will be provided for moisture sensing dryers from the programs qualifying product list and 2) Electric Hot Water Heaters are not ENERGY STAR qualified; rebates will be provided for eligible electric hot water heaters from the programs qualifying product list.

How Do I Apply for the Rebate and What are the Requirements?

Applicants must attest that the cost of appliance and/or the installed cost of equipment they are requesting a rebate for is not covered by insurance or FEMA grants. If the applicant has not yet received a determination from FEMA or their insurance company, the applicant must attest that he/she will disclose the NYSERDA rebate to both FEMA and their insurance company. You will also be required to attest that your appliance purchase is a replacement that is a direct result of the storm.

Applicants must be a New York State resident who sustained property damage resulting from Hurricane Irene or Tropical Storm Lee, and the qualified appliance(s)/equipment must be installed at a New York State residential address. Rebates are available to residents and owners of single-family and multifamily homes.

MTA officials say that New York City Subway service should resume Monday morning at 6 a.m., with some exceptions. Officials say full service will not resume on the 3, 6, 7, A, C and N trains. There will also be no service to the Rockaways and the Franklin Avenue Shuttle will not run. The Staten Island Rail Road will resume tonight at midnight. Officials cautioned that trains will be less frequent and trains will likely be crowded.
