World Martial Arts Center

World Martial Arts Center isn’t just a gym where individuals can improve their muscle tone or fine-tune their roundhouse kick—it’s a refuge designed to help clients build both inner and outer strength. These lofty aims motivate the center’s instructors, who help students achieve their goals. During hapkido classes, they teach seven techniques—strikes, blocks, holds, throws, weapons, internal techniques, and healing—that combine to create one fluid and versatile mode of self-defense. Alternatively, trainers also lead groups through a series of punches and kicks during kickboxing classes, which use combat moves to create a high-octane, total-body workout. Equipped with 25 years of hapkido and kickboxing training and instruction, Master David Herbert teaches beginner classes, available at both locations.

Inside the dojang, or school, Eastern-style tapestries and plants set guests at ease as they work toward physical or metaphysical improvement. To that end, World Martial Arts Center complements its training regimens with health and nutrition advice. In addition, both the Brooklyn and Manhattan locations boast locker rooms for men and women, where guests can shower after a vigorous training session or lock up their Bruce Lee bobble heads while they work out.

$75 for Three-Hour Sailing Clinic or Evening Excursion at New York Sailing Center ($195 Value)

Sailing lessons teach you to navigate choppy waters or awkward conversations during unnaturally still waters. Weather any storm with this Groupon.

$75 for a Three-Hour Intro to Sailing Clinic or a Three-Hour Evening Excursion (a $195 Value)

During the intro to sailing clinic, an experienced instructor teaches students the basics of sailing and supervises students operating the boat, including stopping, tacking, jibing across the wind, and trimming sails. Along the way, groups can catch views of New York City and City Island’s tree-lined banks. Intro to sailing clinics usually have up to 4 students per session, and evening excursions usually have to up 5 passengers. The evening sailing excursion launches out into similar waters, but lets passengers choose whether or not they want to operate the boat. Groups can soak in the warm colors of dusk and peer through the ship’s mast toward the New York City skyline.

New York Sailing Center

Just a subway train’s throw from Manhattan, City Island seems like a different world—tree-lined banks and sprawling waters that stretch toward the New York City skyline. New York Sailing Center’s owner Captain Stephen Glenn Card touts the location for its absence of man-made disturbances such as wind shears and strong currents. Captain Card has taught since the 1980s, and continues to lead multiday immersive-sailing classes for everyone from beginners to advanced cruisers and navigators.

Throughout the years, they have developed a fine-tuned training system that combines in-classroom instruction (including practice with a large, moveable boat) and on-water obstacle courses within City Island Harbor and the Long Island Sound. Atop these waters, students practice on Beneteau sailing boats—twin-rudder vessels that can accommodate beginner’s mistakes. As students progress, instructors teach more advanced skills such as racing and navigation. They even take some of their brightest pupils on sailing trips to destinations such as Italy or Captain Hook’s retirement home.

Skilled instructors helm a variety of lessons from Intro to Tennis classes to private one-on-one intensives. All teachers are trained professionals and most have played competitively at the collegiate level. Both Iannucci and Kern exhibit a particular flair for swing and have developed a faculty that includes International Lindy Hop Championship–award-winners Evita Arce and Michael Jagger. Master classes and workshops focus on partnering tricks, syncopated footwork, and advanced embellishments. Wedding sessions help engaged couples enjoy a graceful, relaxed first dance.

All students are also enrolled as members in the VIP program, which offers discounts within the dance community. Instructors foster a fun, welcoming environment by leading weeknight practices and special events with discounted admission to program members which are occasionally punctuated by niceties such as roses, cupcakes, and emoticons. To that end, the studio hosts Friday-night parties and monthly open houses fueled by live DJs, as well as performances by staff and students.

$180 for a One-Night Stay for Two in a Deluxe King Room at Ameritania Hotel New York

Architectural Gem in the Center of the Theater District

The legendary marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater sparkles in blue and gold, trumpeting the Late Show with David Letterman. Stationed in the heart of Times Square, the theater has welcomed guests from The Beatles to the Muppets and today shares a corner with the Ameritania Hotel New York, with a vertical sign that juts out a few stories above the theater’s marquee. This boutique hotel may not share its neighbor’s celebrity, but its channeled stonework and pediment windows form a classic Beaux-Arts building.

The lobby’s terrazzo-marble floor lead the way to the deluxe rooms, recently renovated in the spring of 2011, where checkered carpeting gives the spaces a modern vibe and accommodates supersize chess pieces. Reading lamps and wooden end shelves are built into the bed’s chocolate-colored leather headboard. Those looking to burn a few calories have access to yoga studios, cardio centers, and resistance-training pulley elevators at the nearby Gold’s Gym. After working out, a pair of complimentary cocktails makes for a relaxing way to cap off the evening at the martini lounge.

Manhattan’s Theater District: Broadway Shows, World-Class Museums, and Stunning Architecture

Saturated in neon lights, giant billboards, and television studios, Times Square best captures Manhattan’s excitement, but there are several world-class cultural institutions scattered throughout the city. Just two blocks from Ameritania, The Museum of Modern Art and its impressive collection sit inside a five-story atrium, hosting such masterpieces as Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night and Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. A mile south of the hotel, a pair of lions named Patience and Fortitude guard the main branch of the New York Public Library, where the Rose Main Reading Room stretches two city blocks. New York’s culinary offerings vary from seven Michelin three-star restaurants to its famous street-fare trucks, which serve quick bites from tacos to falafel to pies.

What You Get

  • One-night stay for two adults in a deluxe king room
  • Gold’s Gym day passes for two
  • Continental breakfast for two
  • Two drinks

Amenities

  • Concierge services

Candlelight Ghost Tours Of Manhattan’s Most Haunted House

Come see the house The New York Times called “Manhattan’s Most Haunted” by flickering candlelight and hear about strange and inexplicable occurrences from the people who actually experienced them.

The Merchant’s House is a truly unique window through which to view the past.  Built in 1832  and occupied by a merchant family for nearly 100 years, the late-Federal brick row house today is New York City’s only family home to have survived virtually intact, inside and out, from the 19th century.

Complete with original family furnishings, the Museum’s Greek revival period rooms show the lifestyle of a wealthy merchant family and their Irish servants from 1835-1865,  when New York City transformed from a mercantile seaport into a thriving metropolis.

Older (and braver!) kids will enjoy this tour of NYC’s most haunted house. Happy Halloween.
