Disappointed in the School Trips

museum post

I have my daughters in private school because I think today the education is better than in public schools. I went to public school for elementary and middle school, but high school I did in a private institution. Back then, things were different, and I did not go to private school because it was better. My mother wanted me to have a more christian education and since I was old enough to travel alone, I was placed in a private high school in Queens, New York. My middle school was great and I took high school level classes, for which I took the Regents exams so I could get the high school credit. I had an awesome principal, Mr. Alfred Ford, who took the time during lunch to tutor a group of us, and had us take SSAT exams for entry into exclusive schools across the country. This type of dedication from a principal was great but I noticed that in the private school everything was more impersonal, even though it was a christian school with allegedly christian values.

Even though my experience was a not so great one, I still placed the girls in private school because the education system in New York City has gone downhill. The problem is not the teachers or the principals, but the parents of students that believe the education of their respective kids is the job of the teacher. Even though when my parents did not speak much English, they still took the time to speak to the teachers and help with the homework assigned to us. Some parents are only seen by the teacher on parent teacher conference and sometimes not at all. I have such an open communication with my girls’ teachers that I even get punishments extended to them at school. I work with them and send in notes because sometimes waiting until parent teacher conference does not help and may hinder the education of the girls.

Asia Gate Entrance at Bronx Zoo.

The one thing I notice is that is lacking in both the public and private schools are school trips. I remember going on school trips once a month, whether to the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Gardens, one of the many museums in the city or any one of the thousands of plays and shows available. My oldest has been in school for 6 years now (2 years of Pre-K) and she has gone on one school trip, and it was to the movie theaters to see Oceans. In the 80s, my parents paid $5.00 for every trip to cover expenses and if a parent was also going on the trip $10.00. School trips are essential for kids to learn as they get see things hands on in the real world. I don’t know the reason school trips are not done like before, because one trip per year is not enough for our kids to get some culture and exposure to the arts and sciences. Some parents don’t have the time to take their children to museums because of work schedules and sometimes even the cost of admittance is out of their reach when they have to pay for more than one at a time.

I’m going to do my best and take the girls to different museums every time they have a day off from school, and that is guaranteed to be once per month as the school always holds a conference day. I had not done so before now because I was under the impression that their girls would be going on school trips like I did when I was their age. Easter vacation will be starting soon and i plan to have a fun-filled week for them because they do deserve it. We have gone through so much in the last couple months after Hurricane Sandy and it’s not fair to them since they don’t understand why we still cannot go home. A little entertainment will help them forget about all we have lost and value what we still have left.

$1,800 for Bladeless LASIK at Astoria LASIK Surgery & Eye Care ($3,900 Value)

When used for good, lasers can correct vision, but when used for evil, they can undermine superheroes during important PowerPoint presentations. Fight the villainy of poor eyesight with this Groupon.

$1,800 for Bladeless LASIK ($3,900 Value)

With more than 9,000 successful LASIK procedures under their belts, the doctors and crew rank among New York’s finest sight enhancers. Using the elite WaveLight Allegretto Wave Eye-Q or the Ziemer FEMTO LDV device, the team reshapes corneas in as little as 10 minutes, clearing up bad vision. Though ultimately designed to eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses, the surgery will result in temporarily blurred vision, so the medical center provides free car service for patients within a five mile radius. Pre- and post-operation care is included with this Groupon.

Astoria LASIK Surgery & Eye Care

Although they established Astoria LASIK Surgery & Eye Care only in 2011, the certified staffers have already made a name for themselves, earning a Rising Star award from the Queens Courier. Equipped with three comfortable waiting areas, four specialized office suites, and 16 spacious examination rooms, the multipurpose health-care center serves the medical, dental, and vision needs of all five boroughs. The doctors, nurses, and administrative professionals speak Spanish, Greek, Hindi, and Arabic, among other languages, and their eco-consciousness makes for a virtually paper-free environment except in their restrooms and really cool, super-top-secret forts where stacks of newspapers act as foundational beams.

$59 for a Medical Checkup with Blood Work at AMG Medical Group ($200 Value)

Like a driving exam, a physical exam ensures bodies are properly responding to their environment and have developed quick reflexes when pelted with deer. Make sure your body is in tiptop shape with this Groupon: for $59, you get a new-patient checkup at AMG Medical Group (a $200 value). This offer is valid at locations in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The checkup includes:

  • A complete physical exam, including medical history (a $150 value)
  • Blood sugar, cholesterol, stool, and urinalysis tests (a $50 value)

New York Times–featured AMG Medical Group tends to the medical needs of its clients with an office in each borough and a staff of patient practitioners. Patients meander into the facilities, which New York Times writer Ariel Kaminer calls “spotlessly clean,” to meet with a licensed doctor. For about 45 minutes, doctors examine bodies during the general physical, looking for telltale signs of sickness or extra fingers. After the examination, doctors perform urinalysis and scrutinize blood and stool samples, testing levels of cholesterol and blood sugar to determine what size of lollipop to award the patient.
