One-Night Stay for Two with Bike Rental and Dinner Credit at Marshall Slocum House in Newport, RI

Historical Bed and Breakfast on Mansion-Lined Street

An enormous copper beech tree presides over the Marshall Slocum Guest House on a mansion-lined street in Newport, Rhode Island. The tree might’ve been planted by the first owners around the time of the construction of this Victorian bed and breakfast in 1855. That both the tree and the bed and breakfast are still standing today speaks to the quaint appeal of Newport.

Today, innkeepers Mark and Dana Spring carry on the tradition of hospitality at this historical inn. They met while working at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Boston, and they draw from their experience there to provide first-class service.

Every morning, Mark Spring whips up a sumptuous full breakfast. Possible menu items include crab benedict, blueberry pancakes, or smoked salmon and bagels. Guests can choose to eat in the dining room, on the back deck overlooking the gardens, or anywhere in their room.

The guest rooms are individually appointed with period antiques, nautical artwork, and private baths. The Captain’s Quarters room, for example, features an elegant carved, four-poster canopy bed and a whirlpool bathtub.

Newport, Rhode Island: Upscale Coastal Town with Hints of the Gilded Age

Historical Newport sits on Aquidneck Island, an upscale area lined with coves, harbors, and bays along the Atlantic Ocean. A prominent American port city in the 18th century, Newport contains the most surviving colonial buildings of any city in the country. During the Gilded Age, the city became a summertime retreat for wealthy New Yorkers, who erected sprawling homes along the shoreline. Many of these came to be known as Newport Mansions, and they’re available for public tours.

Another remnant of the Gilded Age is Newport’s cliff walk, a 3.5-mile stretch that skirts the city’s eastern shore and has scenic views of the ocean and mansion. There are unpaved sections of the walk and 70-foot drops just off the pathway, so visitors should tread carefully and wear antigravity boots.

One- or Two-Night Suite Stay for Two at Hotel Dolce Villa in Rhode Island

Luxury 21st-Century Hotel in the Heart of Providence’s Little Italy

In Providence’s Federal Hill district, Italian eateries are sandwiched side by side along Atwells Avenue, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, luring out-of-towners and locals alike with the promise of Old-World comfort fare served in an upscale setting. As co-owner of Mediterraneo, a AAA Four Diamond restaurant, Gianfranco Marrocco knows the appeal of simple, time-tested ingredients delivered with a dose of novelty. That same recipe is the foundation for Marrocco’s Hotel Dolce Villa, which wraps the traditional comforts of a luxury hotel in an ultramodern package.

Although its yellow balconies reference centuries-old villas, each of Dolce Villa’s 14 suites is unmistakably contemporary. A white-on-white color theme permeates through the tile floors, walls, and custom-made leather furniture, as well the memory-foam bed. An open kitchen houses a stainless- steel refrigerator, stovetop, and oven, inviting guests to re-create their favorite Italian recipes. After a day spent walking Providence’s historical boulevards and perusing its jetpack dealerships, guests can snack on complimentary hot chocolate and biscotti while rejuvenating tired feet and legs in the bathroom’s whirlpool tub.

This Getaway also includes a 20% discount at Marrocco’s local eateries, including Caffe Dolce Vita and Geppetto’s Pizzeria, both of which are steps from the hotel. Smoke Lounge, a trendy cigar and hookah lounge located behind the property, stocks a full bar as well as a kitchen serving appetizers and paninis. Plasma-screen TVs broadcast sports in high-def as smoke whisks up through a custom ventilation system.

Providence, Rhode Island: Culinary Hub Rich in Art and History

In addition to being an authentic Italian pocket, Federal Hill is one of Providence’s essential foodie havens, with Italian grocers and specialty food stores packed within the neighborhood, located in the center of the city. Local gourmand Cindy Salvato leads culinary tours of the district’s wine shops, bakeries, and butchers, which start from DePasquale Plaza right in front of the hotel. About a 20-minute walk east, downtown Providence mines talent from Johnson & Wales University, a nationally renowned cooking school that trains aspiring chefs in techniques, trends, and how to wear a chef’s hat in the shower and in bed.

A 15-minute walk north, the Rhode Island School of Design anchors a thriving arts community. Student work is on display in numerous coffee shops and bars around town, complementing the historical charm intrinsic in one of America’s oldest cities. Brown University, Providence’s Ivy League school, displays work from Manet, Degas, and other 19th-century prints at its David Winton Bell Gallery.
