Will the Kingsbridge National Ice Center be Good for the Bronx?

knicFor years, there has been much debate on what should be done at the Kingsbridge Armory, which has been vacant for many years. A while back, it was decided that the armory will become the first indoor This seems like a great idea, but will this center be affordable for the  people of the Bronx? We already have an ice skating rink, recently opened in Van Courtlandt Park and the prices are very reasonable.

Today, work came out that Mark Messier will be the CEO of the Kingsbridge National Ice Center and all I can think about is how I am not going to be able to afford to take my kids there. The center is not expected to open until 2017 and by that time its going to be more expensive than the alternatives we have in the other boroughs. From the looks of it, I will not be using the facilities as its out of my budget. Do you think you will be going to the Kingsbridge National Ice Center, or will you stick to the skating rinks we know you can afford?

Zombie Entry for One or Human Entry for Two to The Zombie Mud Run on November 3 (Up to 70% Off)

People love an adrenaline rush, which is why we play extreme sports and go bulk shopping. Go big with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

  • $75 for race registration for two as humans (up to a $250 value)
  • $39 for race registration for one as a zombie (up to a $125 value)

The race takes place on Saturday, November 3, in East Windsor, New Jersey. Gates open at 7 a.m. Wave times start every half hour, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Race participants should arrive two hours prior to their designated start time.

Though The Zombie Mud Run sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

The Zombie Mud Run

The Zombie Mud Run finally gives people an incentive to exercise—the survival of their species. Amid forested trails, muddy creeks, and challenging obstacles, participants of this post-apocalyptic 5K face off to either save the human race or feast on human flesh, respectively. Clad in a flag-football belt with three flags that represent their brains, heart, and entrails, human participants race to get themselves and their fellow living athletes to the Green Zone, which grants salvation in the form of food, water, music, and beer. Meanwhile, costumed zombies—each of whom are either slow-moving “creepers” or fast-moving “leapers”—positioned along the race course pursue the humans to devour their organs or simply return that contact lens they dropped a mile ago. Human runners who reach the Green Zone with at least one of their flags survive.

  • $39 for 20 45-minute kickboxing or hapkido classes, including a uniform (a $400 value)

Call ahead or check the schedule for upcoming classes at the Brooklyn and Manhattan studios; Groupons are valid at either location. Both locations offer beginner classes taught by Master David Herbert, drawing from 25 years of hapkido and kickboxing training and instruction.

World Martial Arts Center

World Martial Arts Center isn’t just a gym where individuals can improve their muscle tone or fine-tune their roundhouse kick—it’s a refuge designed to help clients build both inner and outer strength. These lofty aims motivate the center’s instructors, who help students achieve their goals. During hapkido classes, they teach seven techniques—strikes, blocks, holds, throws, weapons, internal techniques, and healing—that combine to create one fluid and versatile mode of self-defense. Alternatively, trainers also lead groups through a series of punches and kicks during kickboxing classes, which use combat moves to create a high-octane, total-body workout. Equipped with 25 years of hapkido and kickboxing training and instruction, Master David Herbert teaches beginner classes, available at both locations.

Inside the dojang, or school, Eastern-style tapestries and plants set guests at ease as they work toward physical or metaphysical improvement. To that end, World Martial Arts Center complements its training regimens with health and nutrition advice. In addition, both the Brooklyn and Manhattan locations boast locker rooms for men and women, where guests can shower after a vigorous training session or lock up their Bruce Lee bobble heads while they work out.

$55 for Five Classes at Krav Maga Institute ($145 Value)

Martial arts encompass many forms of hand-to-hand combat, from jujitsu to punching walls in your sleep. Focus your fury with this Groupon.

$55 for Five Krav Maga Classes ($145 Value)

Instructors teach students instinct-based maneuvers such as grabs, punches, and weapon-based assaults designed to fend off attacks.

Krav Maga Institute

Krav Maga may be a battle-tested art developed for the Israeli Defense Force, but its practical self-defense tactics benefit soldier and civilian alike. This broad appeal is reflected in the teaching staff at the International Krav Maga Foundation–certified Krav Maga Institute, which includes an amateur-boxing champion, an active US Marine, and a PhD in genetics. They introduce the martial art in beginner-friendly classes, demonstrating how it takes advantage of an individual’s natural instincts to create devastating counterattacks meant to incapacitate an opponent as quickly as possible. Techniques include many responses to modern attacks, such as assaults involving guns, knives, or Tumblr pages filled with really gross pictures. Women’s only classes are on their way; in the meantime, instructors recommend that ladies consider coed classes to practice their moves against beefier opponents. In addition to normal classes, instructors also host special workshops that supplement their curriculum, such as a bar-fighting seminar in which students learn how to fend off unexpected attacks from flagpoles.
